Donegal

stone circle DonegalDonegal is the second largest county in Ireland and is perhaps the most spectacular.   It has everything,  an amazing coastline,  mountains, wonderful valleys and both rugged and truly picturesque landscape.

We visit some wonderful ancient sites like The Beltony Stone Circle, (the most important circle in Ireland) and The Grianan of Aileach.  There are incredible scenic views in Donegal and these include Slieve League Cliffs, (the highest sea cliffs in Europe, yes, even higher than The Cliffs of Moher) Glencolumbcille, Glensesk Pass etc.  There are also some wonderful towns and villages to be seen including Ardara,  Glenites, Falcaragh, Donfanaghy, Crolly, Dongloe etc.

Island Cotage DonegalWe also like to visit Mallin Head,  which is Ireland’s most northerly point.  This is part of the Inis Owen Peninsula Drive and there are many fine beaches to be explored also.

If time and the weather permits, we try to visit Tory Island.  This is an island 40 minutes by boat from the mainland.  We are usually met off the boat by the King of Tory, Patsy Dan and by the dolphin in residence, if we are lucky.

As you can imagine all of the above cannot be seen in 3 days and the nature of this county does not allow us to plan this leg in detail.  We do know where we will be sleeping every night.  The rest is in the lap of the Gods and of course depends on the weather. We will also hear some truly unique Donegal traditional music and song each night
